Adding Clowe only begins to make sense if you speculate that the Flyers plan to trade Simmonds or Hartnell in a deal to add a defenseman. Otherwise, I agree. let's see what McGinn can do.

Agreed, although I'd actually hope McGinn gets a shot regardless of if they stay or go. Definitely a big body, can throw em, and has some skill with the puck on his stick.
However, just another point to what you said. In the past 2 seasons, they've shipped off 3 players with long-term contracts (Richards, Carter, and JvR). If they were to ship off one of Hartnell, or Simmonds, who just signed long-term contracts, it may be hard to lure free agents here, because they may be a little insecure about trying to set up shop in the area.

Although with the new CBA a NMC goes into effect as soon as the player signs the contract and not when the contract starts. I think they put that clause in specifically because of Holmgren and Richards / Carter. I don't think it applies to contracts signed before the CBA though so in theory Hartnell and Simmonds wouldn't apply but if we signed Clowe for 7 years with a NMC it would...
Please don't do anything stupid Holmgren... I'm really hoping we are being used as a stalking horse.

Rosehill deal makes zero sense to me. Harry Z at least brought energy to the lineup when he dressed. I hope the Flyers are making this trade to clear a salary slot in the offseason.

The only way Clowe makes sense is if they are going to attempt to move either of Hartnell or Simmonds for defensive assets.

Otherwise, it's kind of a waste.

Also, I think it's kind to call Jay Rosehill an "above average fighter".

hours later I still hate the Harry Z move. I get that he is Harry Z. we are not talking about a regular. I get that he has little finish. but quite frankly I rather have a young guy who is still under control (RFA) with little finish who has blazing speed for a guy who is a slug/fighter who has no finish.

Harry Z's deal runs out after this Season also. So the deal was not made to clear a salary slot in the off seasons. It was done to add some toughness to the lineup in response to the last couple of games with Giroux being targeted.

And on top of that, from the sound of things, most teams with interest in Clowe want him more as a rental. Meaning, if the Flyers really do want Clowe, why not take your chances and wait til the offseason when all it will cost is money if he makes it there. And if he doesn't, you still have Simmonds, Hartnell, and McGinn.

Read, Gus, and the 2nd rounder that holgrem wants to get rid of for Big Buff. Any thoughts?

bad trade for the wrong reasons. fortunately, it's a low level enuf of a move that its unlikely to hurt them.

if rosehill does stick around however, we will have a situation where the flyers are once again dressing a guy who'll play 5 mins...in effect, giving us 11 forwards that nite.

agreed ... and I'm praying it's not Simmonds that's traded, though he would logically seem to have a lot of value.

It's not a bad trade. And wanting to protect your star player isn't a wrong reason. It's a minor move in which they traded a player who was never likely to be a regular.

Nick Kypereos of sportsnet reported that it might be a 3 team deal which is why it is taking so long to complete, so maybe flyers are part of a Ryane Clowe trade and are not getting Ryane Clowe.....just a thought

I'm not a huge Dustin Byfuglien fan.

Remove Read and add someone not on the current roster and I'd consider it, but again.....not a huge fan.

Sense of impending doom feeling right now.
The losing games in the short season I can handle for some reason.
Clowe for a 1st rounder or a viable young forward I can't.

I'm sorry, I had to post this trade proposal from the Vancouver board:

Higgins, Jensen, Booth, Ballard, Lu for Couturier, Hartnell, Schenn twins, and Simmonds
